The slowness of winter

I love winter time. After working for months in the garden, I anticipate the slowness of the winter months. It's a time for my garden to rest, as well as myself. I love the quiet mornings of feeding the dogs their biscuits, checking on how many eggs the chickens have laid and feeding the horses, anxiously awaiting their meal. I am finding myself filling our many bird feeders once a day. We love watching all the different kinds of birds that make our garden a feeding station, I have come to enjoy this time of day and am so thankful for the quiet farm life and the simple joy these chores bring me. After all the animals are taken care of, I have my first cup of strong black coffee. This is a great time of year to plan for my upcoming classes. I love going over my many flower and gardening books, excited about what's to come in my garden. This is also a time to explore all the art classes I want to do with children and plan for the floral classes in the yard and barn. In the spring and summer, I am outside most of the day and don't have time to do research.
As much as I love the quiet winter months, I am now looking forward to the warmth of spring. My snowdrops are popping their heads out of the dirt and I am hearing the sweet songs of the Robins that are returning to our trees. I am beginning to see little buds on our flowering trees and the sweet smell of the sarcococca blooming around our front porch. It's the time of year where all my senses are in full swing enjoying the beauty of the awakening plants.
A guest that was at a wedding in our yard last summer, said to me....."I bet you know every blade of grass and every petal of your flowers in this yard." That was such a beautiful thing to hear. It's a powerful statement that meant the world to me. We love sharing our yard and grounds with others that appreciate all the work that goes into keeping it so beautiful. This is one of the reasons I want to share our beautiful property with others through art classes for children and floral classes for adults. Follow along for more classes coming soon...... Happy Almost Spring!
